Both boys love the chickens. Sam runs around their cage causing them to scurry underneath their house, while John prefers to talk to them from the fence. The speckled one (Lilith) is the boldest of the bunch. She was the first one out the other day and is the smart one who found her way through the fence. They seem rather content in their area with long grass to lounge in and nibble on when the mood strikes, as well as plenty of small insects that fly within their reach. It’s hilarious to see them jump in the air and grab a fly. It reminded me of the chopstick trick on Karate Kid - made me laugh.
Initially we were going to allow them to roam free throughout the backyard, but since they have a liking for the patches of new grass Grant is carefully tending. Melvin causes enough trouble in that area, so we don’t need to exacerbate the situation. We’re still going to move them, but will keep their area more defined.
One hen is consistenly laying eggs – pretty much one per day. We still think it’s Lilith because she looks to be in the best condition, but we can’t be certain unless we catch her in the act. Who knows, maybe a chicken cam will be in order soon!
