Snowy day play

It is winter solstice, and I’m anxiously awaiting the lunar eclipse. I figure I won’t be around in another 450 (or so) years so it’s worth losing a couple of hours of sleep to see it. Hopefully, I’ll have photos to post tomorrow. As a gardener, I’m happy to finally crack over this point where the days will soon start growing longer. Even though we had a glorious, wam fall it’s been a tough winter on me… and it’s only started.

We woke up to a few more inches of snow, but thankfully the sun came out. After a gray and cold weekend – and probably through influence of the moon –  we’re all going a bit stir crazy. The boys were practically climbing the walls, and I contemplated hunkering down in the bathtub for a few hours during our morning game of ‘Hide and Seek”. We needed to be outside. Dressing the boys for winter play is a feat by itself. It takes a half an hour to find everything, then grab and dress them. Greased pigs might be easier. By the time we go out we’re all hot and sweaty. Of course, with an outside temperature around 18 degrees, it doesn’t last long.

Sam loves the snow. I don’t think he’s my child. He immediately started playing with a train through the powdery drifts. John just falls over. I grabbed the plastic sled to make it easier for him, and was delighted when Sam wanted to pull him. He gave a great effort, but it wasn’t long before he joined John on the sled and I stomped around the back yard. We made a few laps before John’s gloves were filled with snow, and he was ready to go inside. It took a little prodding, and promises of hot cocoa, to coax Sam back indoors.

It’s frightening when the chickens are the smart ones of the bunch. They hunkered in their coop all day. Grant took them fresh water first thing in the morning, and I brought out warm oatmeal left from breakfast. They’re very spoiled girls.

  1. Donna had this to say about that:

What a cute story. You look like you and the boys had a great time in the snow. But you are probably right that the chickens had the right idea. Have a happy, snowy Christmas, they are the best kind.

Oh, how I remember the days of active young ones and the work of bundling them up! It seems like yesterday. Now I just wish they would stay home a bit more. : ) Try to savor the moments. I know you can’t imagine it now, but someday it will seem like it was over in the blink of an eye.
