This spring Sam decided he wanted to grow popcorn. We were at Bundi Gardens, and he saw the popcorn plants in the containers and had to have them. I can easily tell the boys “no” in the grocery store when they’re begging for candy or the ‘Angry Bird’ merchandise, but can’t say “no” to a plant request. We came home with popcorn.
He planted it and took care of it throughout the summer, and was delighted when the little ears formed. The plants thrived until the earwigs found them. They ate all the silks and crawled in and out of the ears like they were little corn condos. It was horrible. I had little hope we’d have anything worthwhile by the time the earwigs were done with them., but we still harvested a few ears to dry.
Fast forward a few months…Sam’s big brother, Blaine, got a popcorn machine for Christmas. Sam remembered his popcorn from the summer, and wanted to try it. So we did. Much to my surprise, it was mature enough and did pop up into nice, big fluffy bites. I’m impressed! Sam already said he wants to put in a whole field so we can have popcorn all of the time. I’m not sure if that’s going to happen, but he’ll definitely be able to plant more.

I think it is wonderful when little guys want to be able to plant and grow things in the garden. it is such an educational tool for them to learn with. I love reading your little stories it warms my heart as I wish that I were able to have more space to grow more things then I am able to in my very limited space, but I try. Thanks again and have a wonderful New Year!
Those darn earwigs! Glad he was able to recover some and pop his corn. I bet it was the best popcorn he’s ever had!
Thanks so much! It’s a blast to watch how the boys grow and learn in the garden. It’s great that you’re gardening even if it’s not a half acre of produce. Every bit is a blessing. Cheers in the New Year!
Adorable pictures!
Last year was such a pain garden wise. I’m glad to see someone got some corn harvested!
You’re absolutely right, Joe. I was very surprised it was mature enough to pop. I just ordered a popcorn called “Tom Thumb.” We’ll get an early start because I’ll seed it inside first. Setting out the plants did very well. Actually, I think I’m going to do it with a fair amount of my sweet corn, too.
