Playing in the barn

One of my favorite things about going back to Ohio is visiting the farm. It's been in our family since the early 1900s (we're still trying to pinpoint the exact date), and although it's considerably smaller than the original 100 acres because roughly 75 acres were sold to create the Barberton Reservoir in 1925, it's Continue reading the story "Playing in the barn"

October bonfire

Long before we arrived in Ohio, Aunt Francie planned a big bonfire party for the whole family. Most years the weather is lovely in this area up until the end of October, and beyond, making it a perfect time for an outdoor gathering. Not this year. The original forecast for the planned date looked rather Continue reading the story "October bonfire"

Kicking around the cemetery

My sister thinks I'm totally weird because I love to cruise the cemeteries, particularly when I'm researching our family history. Thankfully, my stepmother completely understands my fascination (since she enjoys it, too). A few days ago Mag, the boys, my niece and I went to Copley Cemetery to try to find Harrison E. Weeks, one of our Continue reading the story "Kicking around the cemetery"

Playing in the leaves in Ohio

The boys are fascinated by the amount of leaves on the ground, and before we were even here Sam made plans to play in the leaf piles. I was a bit dubious on whether it was actually going to happen because of the extraordinary amount of rain they've had in Ohio this year. My sister said it was up to 58 inches for the year Continue reading the story "Playing in the leaves in Ohio"

Autumn hike along the River’s Edge Trail

In the early spring one of my goals for the year was to hike a good hunk of the River's Edge Trail, one of the gems of the Great Falls area. There is approximately 40 miles of excellent trail along the Missouri River and through the prairie. With the cold, wet and windy spring it Continue reading the story "Autumn hike along the River’s Edge Trail"

A little target practice

A few weeks ago we finally made it out to a nearby shooting range to try out some of our new additions to the collection. When I was pregnant with Sam we sold my Remington Model Seven 7mm-08 because it kicked more than I liked, even with the muzzle break, and was never consistent. To replace Continue reading the story "A little target practice"

Day at the cabin

Last week we finally went down to Gramma Elsie and Grandpa Vin's cabin in Neihart. It's such a great place, and I can't believe it's taken us until the end of September to spend some time there! Of course, the boys loved it. They threw so many rocks in the creek that it might have Continue reading the story "Day at the cabin"

Cheering on Grandpa Vin in the Senior Olympics

Yesterday evening Grandpa Vin ran the 3 mile event in the Senior Olympics held here in Great Falls. We were concerned part of the Rivers Edge Trail might have the Missouri River covering sections of it, but thankfully their route kept them high and dry. They started at the "Buffalo Fish" sculpture near Central Continue reading the story "Cheering on Grandpa Vin in the Senior Olympics"

The call of the pike

We've been watching the forecast for the past week to try to make it onto the ice. Unlike the majority of the winter, warm weather and horrendous winds were what kept us home. Last week, the gauge in Choteau clocked a 114 mph gust before failing. That would've sent our ice house into the next county, and probably  blown the boys across the lake.  It's Continue reading the story "The call of the pike"

Snowy day play

It is winter solstice, and I'm anxiously awaiting the lunar eclipse. I figure I won't be around in another 450 (or so) years so it's worth losing a couple of hours of sleep to see it. Hopefully, I'll have photos to post tomorrow. As a gardener, I'm happy to finally crack over this point where the Continue reading the story "Snowy day play"
