Parsley and other planting

Sam is a big fan of herbs. Auntie Karen gave him a little terra pot with a peat mix and parsley seeds for Easter. He planted it the following day, and set it aside for well over a week. Then one afternoon he checked and came screaming around the corner, "They're up! They're up!" Although Continue reading the story "Parsley and other planting"

Today was the opening day for Park Place and Electric City Conservatory, two of the community gardens managed by River City Harvest. It was a normal windy day for Great Falls,  but the gardeners were very enthusiasticdespite being windburnt and chilled. As usual, we have a great group of people who are willing to work hard Continue reading the story "River City Harvest’s first herb garden"

Finally planting

Can it really be May 11 and I'm only now planting my tomatoes? Although our "official" last frost date is around May 15 ( last year we had a frost June 13), I try to put my tomatoes in Wall-O-Waters by the middle of April.  It wasn't an option this year with the cold, Continue reading the story "Finally planting"

Planting the square foot garden

Since our natural soil is such a struggle and I'm concerned about using more of the composted horse manure from the nearby stable because of the potential herbicide residue, I opted to build a few Square Foot Gardens. SFG are a ingenious gardening style designed by author Mel Bartholomew who literally wrote the book Continue reading the story "Planting the square foot garden"

Grafting and growing

I know everyone is tired of hearing me whine - and frankly I'm sick of it myself - but this lousy weather will never end! For the past week I've been trying to make a how-to video about trimming fruit trees, but it's either been snowing or we're battered with 30 mph winds. It sounds like a train roaring through the mic so I Continue reading the story "Grafting and growing"

Playing in the dirt

It started off pretty deary this morning. I thought I would have flats of plants taking up the dining room for most of the day, but thankfully the sun peeked out shortly after lunch warming up the greenhouse enough to haul them outside.   Once Continue reading the story "Playing in the dirt"

There are already multiple reasons why I love my job, the first of which is being able to immerse myself in topics I thoroughly enjoy. The second is because I'm able to talk with others who share the same interests. This is why when one of my editors at Bowtie, Inc. (they publish Hobby Farms, Continue reading the story "Join the fun on Hobbyfarms.com Forum"

Garden cleanup

My least favorite part of gardening is cleaning up and putting everything away at the end of the season. I dread it. I just don't like putting away my toys. But today was absolutely gorgeous, and I took the opportunity to tidy up before the snow falls.    Last week I organized the little garden Continue reading the story "Garden cleanup"

The best autumn ever

It's beyond belief that it's nearly the middle of October and we haven't had a frost, let alone a hard freeze. I do back flips every morning that it's above 32 degrees. The garden seems to have caught its breath, as well. Sweet peas are blooming better than they did earlier in the Continue reading the story "The best autumn ever"

Where the deer and the antelope play

The autumn is bringing the wildlife closer to home. We know the deer have been around throughout the summer since they've nibbled back newly planted trees and raspberries, but it's nice to see the antelope return. They've been in nearby fields during the season. The herd of eight showed up behind our place about Continue reading the story "Where the deer and the antelope play"
